Sawdust
Unfortunately, not recyclable and may be placed in the garbage. In small quantities, it can be added to compost, but it is slow to break down. In some cases, it can be used as mulch. Sawdust can be used to dry out latex paint for disposal.

Scanners
These accepted at your SEIRD recycling center. There is not charge for disposal. Electronic devices with a screen:$15 per unit.

Scrap Metal
For example: Bicycle, Riding and push mowers, rototiller, snowblower: Check with local metal dealers. Also accepted by SEIRD recycling centers. (Please empty oil and gasoline.)

Sealant
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time. Latex Sealant: This is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage, once it is dried out.

Sealed Lead Acid Batteries
Small sealed lead acid batteries found in computers and electronic equipment can be recycled at SEIRD recycling centers.

Septic Tank Cleaner
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time.

Shampoo Bottles
Emptied and rinsed, the bottles are accepted at SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside recycling programs. Caps should be removed, if possible, and placed in the garbage.

Sharps
Check with your county health department for local regulations.

Sheet Glass
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Sheetrock
Gypsum board may be useful for a local farmer to spread on fallow fields. Otherwise, not reusable or recyclable. Large new pieces can be brought to the Building Materials Reuse Center in East Enterprise (Switzerland Co.) during normal business hours. Shingles Landfill. There may be a disposal fee.

Shoes
Charitable organizations (Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) will often accept shoes in good condition. SEIRD Reuse centers also accept clean shoes. Otherwise they are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash.

Shredded Paper
Accepted a SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside recycling programs.

Sinks
Landfill or transfer station. There may be a disposal fee. Consider donating used sinks in good condition to charitable organizations, or to our Building Materials Reuse Center in East Enterprise (Switzerland Co.) during normal business hours.

Smoke Detectors
Accepted at SEIRD recycling centers. There is no charge for disposal.

Soap Bottles
Empty, rinse and reccle at SEIRD ceners or through curbside pickup. Pumps should be removed and placed in the garbage.

Soda & Beer Cartons
Accepted at SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside recycling programs.

Soda Bottles
Empty, rinse and recycle at SEIRD recycling centers or place for curbside pickup. Remove caps and place them in the garbage.

Solvents
These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time.

Sporting Goods
Resell or donate if they are in good condition. Items can be taken to a SEIRD Reuse Center, otherwise they are not recyclable.

Spot Remover/Solvents

Stains (oil-based)

Stains (water-based)
Water-based stain is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage once the stain is dry.

Steel Cans
Empty, rinse and recycle at SEIRD centers or with curbside pickup.

Sticky Notes
Accepted at SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside programs.

Stove
Accepted by SEIRD recycling and at reuse centers if working. Also check with local scrap metal dealers.

Street Sand
May be placed in the garbage.

Styrofoam (Polystyrene)
There are some areas where this material is accepted for recycling. Unfortunately, not recyclable through SISWD yet and must be placed in the garbage.

Syringes & Needles
Do not place syringes or needles in the trash or recycling. Check with your county health department for local regulations
