Packing Peanuts & Bubble Wrap
They are unfortunately not recyclable and if not reused, must be placed in the garbage. Check with your local packing/shipping store to see if they will accept these materials for reuse.

Pagers
Accepted at SEIRD recycling centers. There is no charge for disposal.

Pails & Metal pails
Scrap dealers may accept these; otherwise put out with the trash. Plastic pails: Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Paints
If the paint is still in usable condition, you can ask a local community theatre group or school theater department or local chapter of Habitat for Humanity if they would like to have it. Otherwise:

  • Latex Paint -Latex paint is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage once the paint is dry. Latex paint will air dry if the lid is left off the can. However, if there is a large quantity remaining in the can, it will require a very long time to dry. You can speed up the process by stirring in clean kitty litter or sawdust. Not accepted at SEIRD recycling centers. Latex paints with an enamel base are also NOT accepted.
  • Paints & Stains (Lead & Oil based) -These are hazardous materials and must not be thrown in the trash or poured out on the ground. These must be brought to the SEIRD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special HHW collections at SEIRD county recycling centers.
  • Water-based stain is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage once the stain is dry.

Paint Cans (empty and dry)
Put in trash.

Paint Thinner
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time.

Pallets
Accepted for reuse at SEIRD recycling centers. Paper accepted at SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside recycling programs. Check the internet for fun projects to repurpose pallets including garden stands.

Paper Towels
Paper towels are unfortunately not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. However, the cardboard tubes may be included with paper recycling. (The cardboard tubes from toilet paper may also be recycled.)

Paperboard
Accepted by SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside recycling programs.

Land-line and cell phones: accepted at SEIRD recycling centers.

Photographic Chemicals
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SEIRD county recycling centers.

Picture Glass
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Pizza Boxes
If there are portions of the box (such as the lid) that are grease-free and food-free, they can be accepted for curbside recycling and by SEIRD recycling centers. Only clean boxes, or the clean parts of boxes, can be recycled.

Plaster
It belongs in the landfill.

Plastics
Check the "locations" page on this site to determine which plastics are accepted in your county. Some freestanding recycling containers that are placed around SEIRD's district often taken plastics #1-7 and are comingled-meaning that as long as the item is recyclable it doesn't have to be presorted. Please DO NOT throw regular trash in these containers.

Plastic Furniture
Plastic furniture is not recyclable. If it is still usable, donate it to a local charity or SEIRD reuse center. Your community may offer a heavy trash pickup. Those who use a contract service should call your provider. They may take it if you schedule a pickup time.

Plastic Shopping Bags
Check with your local grocery stores for recycling programs, or reuse as many times as possible. Also accepted at SEIRD recycling centers. Recycled into new plastic bags.

Plastic Utensils
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Plastic Wrap
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Plates
Glass, ceramic, plastic, or metal: If still in good condition, plates may be donated to local charities, SEIRD Reuse Center, or offered at a tag sale. Plates in any condition are unfortunately not recyclable. Paper plates are NOT recyclable and must be placed in the trash.

Plexiglass
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Plywood
Do try to find someone who can use it. Large new pieces can be taken to the Building Materials Reuse Center in East Enterprise (Switzerland Co.) during normal business hours. Check with your trash hauler for disposal options.

Polyurethane and other Floor & Deck Finishes
These are considered hazardous to the environment and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special HHW collections at SEIRD county recycling centers.

Pool Chemicals
These are considered hazardous to the environment and must be brought to the SEIRD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SEIRD county recycling centers.

Posters
Accepted for recycling at SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside programs. Posters that have been mounted on foam core are not recyclable.

Post-It Notes
Accepted by SEIRD recycling centers and by curbside programs.

Prescription Drugs
Do not flush medications down the drain or toilet or throw in the trash. Check with your pharmacist, health department, or on this website for disposal options.

Pressure-Treated Lumber
Pressure-treated wood should only be disposed of in a lined landfill, not an incinerator. Do not dispose of pressure-treated wood in a backyard compost pile, brush pile, chipping pile, or trash incinerator.

Printers
Disposal is available at SEIRD recycling centers. There is no charge for this service.

Propane Tanks
Accepted at SEIRD recycling centers.

Power Mower
Before disposing of any lawn mower, remove the gas and oil. These are hazardous materials and must be brought to a SEIRD processing center in Jefferson Co. Lawn mowers are considered scrap metal and are accepted by scrap metal dealers and by SEIRD recycling centers.
